What are stingless bees?

Stingless bees belong to the Tribe Meliponini and are characterised by their reduced stingers which are not used in defense. Globally, more than 500 species of stingless bees have thus far been identified, with a minimum of 16 species currently found in Trinidad and Tobago. These bees are closely related to honeybees (Tribe Apini, with the only species found in Trinidad and Tobago being Apis mellifera), orchid bees (Tribe Euglossini), and bumble bees (Tribe Bombini, none of which are found in Trinidad and Tobago).
