There are approximately 70 species of bats belonging to 9 Families found in Trinidad and Tobago. Bats are not only useful pollinators, many species also feed on a variety of insects, including those carrying diseases such as mosquitoes, and provide many other useful ecosystem services such as seed dispersal. Information on the many different species of bats can be found on the Trinibats website, an NGO dedicated to the conservation of bats.
Bats involved in pollination include members of the Subfamily Glossophaginae (Nectar-feeding bats) – four species of which are found in Trinidad and Tobago.
The BES-Net TT Project, in collaboration with Mr. Darshan Narang, added to the body of work that now exists about Trinidad and Tobago’s bats, specifically those that pollinate plants.
