About our iNaturalist Projects
What is iNaturalist?
According to iNaturalist, “iNaturalist is a lot of different things, but at its core, iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. It’s also a crowdsourced species identification system and an organism occurrence recording tool. You can use it to record your own observations, get help with identifications, collaborate with others to collect this kind of information for a common purpose, or access the observational data collected by iNaturalist users.”
A good place to start learning more about iNaturalist and how to use it is with their extensive collection of video tutorials, which can be found here.
Are you an educator and want to learn more about how to use iNaturalist? Have a look here.
Why do we use iNaturalist?
iNaturalist allows us to engage and educate the public using citizen science while improving the database on native and non-native species found in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. The data not only tells us about what species are present, but about population trends, the appearance of alien invasive species, species diversity, and species distributions, among others. The website and app are easy to use and projects can be designed to fit specific needs. This is particularly useful when designing projects in, with and for schools.
Why should you use iNaturalist?
- To learn more about nature – crowdsource identifications, become a citizen scientist, run a bioblitz, learn about the species found in your environment, and connect with experts and others with similar interests
- To add to our knowledge of biodiversity in the Caribbean
- To educate others
